About us

The International Dairy Federation is the leading source of scientific and technical expertise for all stakeholders of the dairy chain.

IDF engages all stakeholders in productive activities and research projects to further current knowledge and science on a wide range of issues. Today, dairy is one of the most vibrant and strategic sectors, with a major impact on national economies, public health and the environment.

Through its working bodies, events and work programme, IDF provides a common platform, systems and processes for the global dairy sector to come together to reach consensus. Given its consensus-building capacity, IDF represents the global voice of dairy towards stakeholders and intergovernmental organizations

Our vision is simply:
“Helping to nourish the world with safe and sustainable dairy”
IDF’s mission is to help nourish the world with safe and sustainable dairy.

The growing world population needs nutritional security, and we must provide this both safely and sustainably. IDF provides a mechanism for the dairy sector to reach global consensus on how to help feed the world with safe and sustainable dairy products. As the peak body for the global dairy sector, IDF has an important role to play in ensuring the right policies, standards, practices and regulations are in place to achieve this goal.

Since 1903, IDF is a recognized international authority which contributes actively to the development of science-based standards for the dairy sector.

IDF and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) have established a joint IDF/ISO work programme for the development of standard methods of analysis and sampling for milk and milk products.

IDF has working relationships with several global intergovernmental organizations, and has a formal status with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the Joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme – Codex Alimentarius.

IDF members are organized in National Committees, which are national associations composed of representatives of all dairy-related national interest groups including dairy farmers, dairy processing industry, dairy suppliers, academics and governments/food control authorities.

Representing the dairy sector as a whole at international level, by providing the best global source of expertise and scientific knowledge in support of the development and promotion of quality milk and milk products, to offer consumers nutrition, health and well-being.
IDF connects scientific and technical dairy expertise from around the world. This facilitates effective identification and resolution of issues on a global  scale, while addressing interdependencies between topics. IDF is committed to furthering current knowledge on environment and sustainable
development, health and nutrition, methods of analysis, farm management, animal health and welfare, dairy science and technology, food hygiene and safety, food standards, dairy policies and economics, and marketing.
